Yesterday, the US ban on Huawei extended until May 2021. Reuters now reports, all companies that use US intellectual property have been prohibited from working with Huawei. The main attention is looked at TSMC and Qualcomm. This means that TSMC does not manufacture processors for Huawei and Huawei can no longer use Qualcomm’s patents for its Kirin SoC.
“The Trump administration blocked delivery of semiconductors to Huawei Technologies from global chip makers on Friday to widen tensions with China.” – Reuters
Also, in any event, for TSMC, Qualcomm, and different makers not referenced, this new guideline is probably going to be a substantial blow. Since with the boycott, they lose probably the greatest client. It is sketchy whether the organizations will take part.
In order for Huawei to continue to receive some chipsets or use some semiconductor designs tied to certain U.S. software and technology, it would need to receive licenses from the Commerce Department.
